After an eventful and unforgettable year all is finally coming to a lovely relaxing end back home with the family for Christmas. I've been off radar recently due to my latest trip to Tanzania. Whilst there I worked along side an amazing non-governmental organization CCBRT (http://www.ccbrt.or.tz/), and helped CNN cover stories of patients visiting the hospital. My aim was to cover the women in the Fistula ward and help cover the doctors rounds whilst updating the imagery for the annual reports. It was a truly incredible experince and one I hope to get a chance to do again.

Here's a collage of photographs I took a few years ago whilst living in Leeds, I named it "The Muggles Project". It started out when I brought a new camera and did some test shots on a friend in the basement of my house, I found the low ceiling and brick back drop perfect for quick mug shots, hence the name. So for the year I lived in the house whenever a friend would come and visit I would try and get their photograph. I didn't manage to get everyone I met in Leeds in here as people come and go but it has a nice portion of people to look back over.

Chomsky and Oogo are one half of the french beat-baker crew La Fine Equipe, most known for their breakthrough work La Boulangerie (which features Onra amongst others) - a tribute to the late great J Dilla's Donuts, their sound is rooted in bittersweet 60s soul, flipped in a year 3000 style. Think Otis Redding meets Flying Lotus over a Pain Au Chocolat in a french bakery.

They are also behind 2010s Fantastic Planet, which marries the tasty productions of La Fine Equipe with the vocal stylings of Wax Tailor MC Mr Mattic, the smoked-out dreamy jazz vocals of danish talent Astrid Engberg, and the nerdy funktastic rhyme-flippery of ASM (A State of Mind).
2011 sees the release of La Boulangerie 2 as well as Chomsky and Oogos boogiefunk excursion side-project, Hoosky. Bakery treats for your ears!

A few weeks back I got asked to shoot some promotional material for UK rapper Akala, I'd heard his music and was happy to get a chance to work along side him. After meeting it was clear that Akala was a personable, real and friendly guy, as well as educated, passionate about his history and an impressive mathematician, you can see that he uses his knowledge throughout his music as a form of expression. Recently Akala presented a documentary on Channel 4 "Life of Rhyme" which looked into the UK music scene and it's unique contribution to spoken word and poetry, be it via rap, jungle, drum and bass, garage. grime or hip hop. Some of the photo's from our shoot are on 4oD to promote the show.

Last month I shot at Lovebox 2011 along side Silverbach Productions, below are some the photographs I captured from the three day event. This years Lovebox didn't disappoint even with the summers wind and rain against it. The festival took place in Victoria Park and had performances by Snoop Dogg, Del La Sol, Blondie, Example, Ziggy Marley, Kelis, Cassius and Groove Armada and loads more. Unlike other London based festivals you can find plenty of things to keep yourself entertained with whilst not watching the acts, the large mix of people brought together for their love of music gives Lovebox a unique stamp in the British festival scene.

Faces of Glastonbury 2011

Glastonbury 2011 for me was an interesting couple of weeks, working along side The Halo Group I was employed to work on the build of a two story favela in the heart of Shangri'la.

Shangri'la is by far the most abstract and vibrant corner you'll discover at the festival. With an interlinking network of corridors, hidden taverns and visual interactions. After the main stages have pack up the people flock to the naughty corner and continue the fun! Whilst working on the project I had the pleasure to meet some characters behind the making. People from all walks work together to create a pop up underground town out of art, scaffolding and steel.

Festival season is well and truly underway and my first port of call was Glastonbury last week, after spending two weeks on a structure build I created a short stop frame animation from beginning to end. I'll be posting it up realll sooon! Whilst on my luxury stay in the mud a friend of mine was the host for the whole team putting us up in his impressive and super comfy bell tents! I shot his new stock for a promo flyer last month. If your doing festivals this year "Boutique Camping" is the way forward.

Burning Man (Black Rock City)

I wish I was a writer, poet or someone who can tell a good story so I could write up on my experience whilst at Burning Man but unfortunately I'm not, instead I've tried to create a visual diary to capture what I experienced through photography. This is a photographic insight into our journey in America and my time at Black Rock City, I'll do my best to keep it simple and pretty.

Arriving in San Fransico and meeting my friends Matt, Dan and Holly we picked up our RV and found a hitch hiker "Louise" before setting off east towards Nevada. We had a week until the festival and decided to stay over a few nights in Yosemite.

After exploring the waterfalls, mountains, forests and giant Sequoia's we moved on via Lake Tahao towards Reno, which would be our last stop in Nevada before we headed into the desert.

After leaving Reno, the second biggest gambling town in the states, we drove towards what looked like on our road map to be a vast nothingness of sand. By this point we had joined a convoy of kitted out vans, trucks, RV's and Art Cars all desert ready and heading to Burning Man. By night you couldn't see anything other than tail lights in the distance. We had been driving off road for most of the night and by sunrise we got the first view of where we were and what our surroundings would be.

Introduction to Burning Man is something that all new comers have to do. Before you pass the gates to the festival you're given a quick briefing and a safety shake down, warning you of all the obvious yet real dangers of a festival in the desert. After this we were each given a hammer with which we had to hit a huge church bell. After that we were welcomed "home" and thanked for making the journey to join them and the rest of the thousands of people who'd done the same.

Midway through the festival I had realized that the most interesting aspect of the Burning Man wasn't its location, music or Art installations but its people. Ranging from young, old, beautiful, weird and wonderful. It was undoubtedly a gathering of people looking to explore and express themselves in a place where judgement from others didn't exist.

Below are some examples of the amazing and unforgettable encounters I had with the residents of Black Rock City

None of these people were models or had planned to shoot portraits for me before we met, each person was either passing me by or going about their day when I stopped them and asked if i could take their picture

Burning Man is host to one of the most fascinating transformations i've ever seen, by day it's one of the most bizarre yet clearly desert like environments in the World, but by night it's like a whole other planet all together. The main reason for this is that with thousands of people wandering the plains and the stars and moon being the only source of light, it's next to impossible to see your owns hands let alone oncoming trucks, so for your own safety and general amusement it's a rule that you cover yourself head to toe in whatever lights and reflectors you can find. It being Burning Man people spent all year round designing individual vehicles each kitted out with their own light show to guide it around, this created a "Tron" like World of giant structures crawling along the horizon lighting it up with lazer shows.

One of the most moving art installations was "The Temple". The difference between the temple and all other art crafts was its interaction with the people. It was like a blank canvas, unfinished and left for us. Over the duration of our stay it got covered with stories, memories, quotes, wishes and prayers to friends, family, loved ones and lost ones. By the end of the week the whole structure on both its inside and out was covered in wishes and pictures of people who had passed away and were being remembered. And on the last night of the festival thousands of people form a circle around the Temple as they burn it down.

Watching "The Temple" burn, sitting amongst thousands of people in complete silence other than the roar and cracking of the raging fire and dust devils dancing out of the flames, looking around seeing the faces of so many people all deeply moved and entranced by the experience they were having and being able to share that with them will be something I'll never forget.

At the end of my time at Burning Man I was ready for a long bath and a much needed rest, a week in the desert is a long time for anyone. I've never been somewhere so vibrant, unique and magical in all my life, you literally never know what the next day will bring, sometimes the best times I had were by standing back watching and observing it unfold.

The journey from beginning to end is a once in a lifetime adventure, and if you take care of yourself and make the most of it for what it is you'd find it almost impossible not to be blown away by the energy and spirit of the place.

One of the highlights of Burning Man which I will treasure and do my best to uphold is the value of sharing. Money whilst there has no value, this is a law of Black Rock City, nothing is for sale.

But instead of buying and selling you give and receive, it's an exchange, you give to someone anything you have, be it water, food, a bracelet, a kiss, a joke, literally anything. This creates an amazing chain reaction, and anywhere you go you stop and have encounters with people sharing. If you have nothing on you at the time it doesn't matter, you go out later that day and give someone something in return. I shared my photos and gave everyone I possibly could my details on how to contact me and receive the photos I had taken of them when they arrived home. It worked really well and enabled me to continue sharing with the people I had met giving them a memory of their Burn.

A.S.M (Platypus Funk)

Beijing to Shanghai

In summer 2009 I set off to China on my first photographic expedition. I'd always had an interest in China as it seemed to have a certain detachment from the rest of the World, giving it a sense of mystery and adventure. On top of that it hosts some of the most beautiful landscapes, fascinating cultures and ancient history anywhere has to offer. Below is a collection of photographs I took of my journey from Beijing to Shanghai. Enjoy

The Forbidden Palace, Beijing

Above is a farmer I came across on my way up to the Great Wall of China, the section of the wall I visited took us through local farming villages at the foot of the mountains.

Xi'an, Terracotta Army. The figures, dating from 210 BC, were discovered in 1974 by some local farmers. The army comprises were over 8,000 soldiers, 130 chariots with 520 horses and 150 cavalry horses. The army was built to guard the first Emperor of China in the after life.

The Yangtze River, traditional local fishermen hard at work rowing up stream and fishing in a small creek along the river.

Chengdu Province, the people and landscapes of Guangxi, and the Lime stone mountains of Yangshuo.

Below are some photographs which I think reflect that divide in China's past and present , the tribal people and ancient lands of rural China against the huge sprawling metropolis of Shanghai.

My time in China was amazing, I set out to document everything I saw and experienced, which I hope is reflected in my photography. China's a beautiful place with friendly and welcoming people, although steeped in controversial and harsh governing it still honors it's traditions as it marches onwards.

Cosmic Post-Production

Below are some portraits of a friend of mine Ben I took in Leeds, This was the first time I experimented with post-production and found it more fun then I expected. By tweaking the colors, contrasts, lighting effects and adding a back drop I got these results, and created both day and night versions in that style.

This second image was a photograph I'd took at Glastonbury. I was inspired by the effects that could be created with with a change in the skyline, and by following the same procedure I created a 3D fantasy World in the heart of Glastonbury.

Here's a few pictures I took recently using a 35mm fixed lens and my 5D mark 2, it was the first break of spring sunlight we'd had this year so i got together a couple of models (Bruna from Brazil and Julie from Germany) and found some locations around South London which suited the early spring feel I was aiming for.

After searching South London we found some gardens and gateways which worked as perfect back drops for the shoot.

He stopped over in London last month to play at BTG (Bridging the Gap), and it was clear that Paul has an impressive knowledge of hip hop, future funk, dub step and big beats, and is defiantly someone to keep an ear out for on his future movements.
